New Books
The start of the year seems to be a key time for the release of health and wellbeing books. Here are three you may find interesting.

Mirelle Guiliano's French Women Don't Get Fat: the secret of eating for pleasure explains how French women can eat rich food, drink wine, avoid the gym and stay slender. The answer lies in the French attitude toward food. Food is not merely fuel to the French. It's also not sinful. As the title suggests, the French love good food. You won't find a French woman tucking into takeaway in front of the TV or using junk food as a reward. Perhaps it's because they pay so much attention to fabulous food that the French are masters of 'balanced eating'. They savour it, eating a little bit of everything. While they aren't lining up to pump iron or do aerobics, walking is a way of life for the French. It's all starting to sound like what your mother told you about moderation, isn't it?

Top British nutritionist and prolific author, Patrick Holford, seems to have decided that to really become famous he needs a diet named after him. And so we have The Holford Diet. He's done what most diet book authors do and added plenty of emotive language ("lose fat fast using the revolutionary fat burner system"). While this book is probably still not outlandish enough to make him a household name, Patrick Holford is renowned as a nutritionist and if you must follow a diet then this is a sensible one based on principles such as balancing your blood sugar. The only diets worth considering are the ones you can follow for a lifetime.

Body Talk: a power guide for girls, by Elizabeth Reid Boyd and Abigail Bray, could be just as useful as a guide for mums of teenage daughters or as a discussion starter for mothers and daughters. Topics covered include body image, weight, clothes, sex and

The Problems with Skipping Meals
Skipping meals is common among women. Many of us think it will reduce our calorie intake and help us lose weight. Some of us miss meals because we just get busy. However, new studies from the University of Nottingham in England demonstrate the pitfalls of doing this.

The research showed that when women ate regular meals they actually took in fewer calories. Their blood sugar and cholesterol levels were also considerably healthier. Skipping meals was a problem for both their weight and their heart health.

No matter how busy you are, you owe it to yourself to make the time to eat regular, healthy meals.

Meditation Classes
Meditation is a valuable tool for finding peace of mind in a busy, demanding lifestyle (and who doesn't have one of those?). Yoga Core Studios at West End in Brisbane (43 Vulture Street) are offering introductory classes (7.30-8.30pm Mondays, cost is $10) as well as a group for people with some experience in meditation (6.00-7.00pm Tuesdays, by donation).
