Happy Mother's Day

I want to keep this newsletter brief. The main purpose is to wish you a happy Mother’s Day and to give you a gift. It’s an electronic version of a little book called Living Fit and Well that I wrote in 2005. It was a way of capturing a smattering of thoughts about what it takes to be healthy in mind, body and spirit. I hope you enjoy it and find it valuable.

Even if you’re not technically a mother, author Susan Griffin explains why we should celebrate being women. I used this quote from her at the start of the book.

Women are beautiful.
The female species is truly grand.
It’s important to honour being a woman
and make our presence in this world
Count for something special.

Just one more thing before I leave you to read it at your leisure….

Smart lifestyle changes for the cooler weather

I want to mention a couple of important changes to make as winter slowly moves in. The first sounds obvious: keep warm. Necks and shoulders are especially vulnerable in chilly weather, so if you’ve had muscular problems in that area, use scarfs or sweaters to keep the cold out.

The second shift is in relation to food. It’s important to eat warm, nourishing dishes in winter. Your crock pot or slow cooker can become your best friend, preparing tasty soups and casseroles while you do other things.

A nutritious but almost forgotten group of slow cooking ‘foods’ are broths and stocks, made from bones. It’s a pity that these are no longer staples because they’re a wonderful source of minerals. The gelatine in the bones improves our digestion and our ability to utilise protein. This is particularly important for anyone who doesn’t eat much meat.

Stocks also give dishes great flavour, and that’s why dedicated cooks keep them on hand. But this is something easy and cheap that we can all do. Just add a bit of acidic wine or vinegar in the water to draw out the minerals.

Our Queensland winters are all too brief, but get out your warm clothes and the crock pot and get ready to enjoy this one!

Until next time
