Fit and Well Reborn

At last, a Fit and Well e-newsletter for 2009! Hope you like the new look. My apologies that there’s been a 6 month gap since the last one, but it made sense to send a newsletter when I could confirm a lot of new things about the business (and the newsletter will be monthly from now!)

With my PhD in the past, I’ve had my attention on breathing new life into Fit and Well. My research reinforced that what’s predictable in midlife is weight gain and a decline in health, and I’m passionately committed to turning that around by helping women to exercise more effectively, eat smart, manage stress, enjoy life and generally take care of themselves in a way that will provide a strong foundation for the rest of their lives.

To all of you who have supported what I’ve been up to for a long time, I want to say a big, heartfelt thank you. I’m keen to reward that support with some great services.

It’s exciting to be able to tell you that Fit and Well will now operate from Newmarket, at 32 Finsbury Street. That’s opposite Finsbury Park, on the border of Newmarket and Wilston. I’m sharing the space with a personal training college called PT Train. The building has a small exercise studio as well as two seminar rooms. That sold me! Anyone who attended a seminar with me years ago will know that I was always borrowing friends’ business premises to run seminars.

New services

Here’s a list of new Fit and Well services, and you can find more details on my NEW website at www.fitandwell.com.au.

  • An early morning walking group (Mondays & Thursdays). If there’s enough demand, I’ll also look at other times.
  • A mid-morning exercise session (Tuesdays & Fridays) that provides a mix of the different kinds of exercise we all need — balance, core strengthening, stretching, resistance training, and, as they say at the Winter Racing Carnival, something to get your heart racing!
  • An early evening relaxation session (Wednesdays) to ease away the mental and physical stresses of the day.
  • A one-on-one New Woman Program for women who want to accomplish specific goals by working with a coach/mentor. This involves a comprehensive lifestyle and physical assessment and a structure of appointments to suit your specific needs.
  • A New Woman Group for those ready to go the whole hog and reinvent themselves and their lives with a group of like-minded women. If you sense that there’s a new you just waiting to be released, this is the opportunity to nurture that fabulous creature and give her the space to blossom. I’m looking for at least 6 women to start the group next month, so I’ve deliberately kept the price very reasonable.
  • And finally, seminars on a range of topics that come under the umbrella of midlife health and wellbeing. The first one is on a breast imaging technology that I think it’s in our interests to know about.

For information on times, prices and so on, go to www.fitandwell.com.au and click on Products and Services. I want Fit and Well to be sourced in a great community of women, so I’d love to hear your thoughts on the website as well as the list of services.

There’s a newsletter subscription spot on the home page, and new subscribers receive an article on Managing Midlife Weight Gain. I’ve provided it here for you, so you don’t miss out. Download Article

What’s coming up in June

Breast Health & Imaging, Tuesday 23 June, 6.30pm at Fit and Well

Jo Firth, Managing Director of Safe Breast Imaging in Perth is visiting Brisbane for a few days and agreed to talk about breast health and a technology called Multifrequency Electrical-Impedence Mammographs (MEM for short). Mammography is recommended as the ‘gold standard’ in breast cancer screening, but it has its downsides. And while mammograms can detect existing cancer, they’re not useful in prevention. MEM is quick, easy, safe, comfortable, and can detect possible problems before they occur.

Instead of using radiation, the MEM measures the electrical properties of cells. Different types of tissue have different levels of electrical conductivity, e.g. breast cancer cells conduct electricity more than normal breast cells. Cysts, lumps and hormonal imbalance are also detected. This technology is also widely used to measure body composition. Click here to see Jo talking about and demonstrating the MEM.

Jo will talk for about 30 minutes and give you a chance to ask questions. We’ll set up a space upstairs so that anyone who wants to have a screening that night can do it, or you might want to arrange another time with Jo. The cost of the MEM is $145. The cost of attending Jo’s talk is just $5 to cover the cost of the room. I’ve done the MEM screening myself, so if you have any questions beforehand, please be in touch. PS. This is for women of any age.

Winter Masterclass, Wednesday 24 June, 5.30-7.30pm at New Farm

An important way of staying healthy in winter is to eat wholesome, nourishing food. Someone who knows a lot about heart-warming winter fare is Brisbane nutritionist, Jilliane Wheeler. Jilliane is running a fabulous Winter Masterclass in New Farm on 24 June from 5.30-7.30pm (see the attached flyer). She loves French cooking, uses great ingredients, and you’ll take away a wealth of knowledge about staying healthy.

Fun Nights Out

Tired of hearing about the GFC and in need of a little fun? Try Judith Lucy’s Not Getting Any Younger at the Powerhouse, 2-21 June, or the return of the popular Menopause the Musical at QUT Gardens Theatre, from 29 June to 8 July.

Until next time
